Title: The Impact of Emerging Adulthood Life Events on Men's Gender Role Journey
Investigators: Laura Burns, M.A. & Richard Niolon, Ph.D.
Thank you for your interest in this dissertation study. Please take your time to read the information below before agreeing to participate.
Purpose: We are investigating potential differences in how men of different backgrounds view gender roles. We are also interested in learning what life events influence the way men view gender roles. The goal of this study is to look at similarities and differences in gender role views and the life events that impact these views.
Procedures: If you agree to participate in this study, you will first complete a demographic questionnaire about your gender, age, race/ethnicity, level of education, sexual orientation, and relationship status. You will not be asked to provide any identifying information. You will then complete a different questionnaire that asks you about your current opinions on gender roles. Finally, you will complete a single question that asks you to rank life events that have been most influential in how you view gender roles today. If you wish to complete the survey, you will not have the option of skipping questions. In exchange for your completion of the survey, you will be given the chance to send an email containing only your email address to the researcher. This will allow you to participate in a raffle for one of four $25 Amazon gift cards. Your email address will not be connected to your survey answers. The four winners of the raffle will receive their prizes by March 2015. The gift cards will be electronically sent from Amazon.com to the email address that the raffle winners entered.
It is expected that the entire procedure will take around 15-20 minutes.
Risks to Participation: We expect minimal to no risk to participants. It is possible that you may experience some slight emotional discomfort in response to the survey questions about your views of gender roles. You will have the option to end the survey at anytime.
Benefits to Participants: You will not directly benefit from this study. However, we hope the information learned from this study may benefit society in our understanding of how men's views of gender roles may vary across demographic groups. It may also help us understand the impact of life events on these views.
Alternatives to Participation: Your participation in this study is voluntary. You may withdraw from study participation at anytime without any penalty.
Confidentiality: Your responses will be anonymous. If you wish to provide your email addresses to be entered into the gift card raffle, your email address will not be linked to your responses on the questionnaires. Data from this study will be stored in a secure data file.
Questions/Concerns: Please contact Laura Burns by email if you have any questions or concerns at [email protected] or Dr. Richard Niolon at [email protected]. Additionally, if you have questions concerning your rights in this research study you may contact the Institutional Review Board (IRB), which is concerned with the protection of subjects in research project.
